Sometimes all it takes is just a little inspiration, maybe a good example to follow. To that end, we're profiling Amy U., a new freelancer with four good months under her belt, and the new Editor-in-Chief and Head Writer of a major new pregnancy site.
Follow Amy's lead into freelance writing by checking out what preparations she took, how she found jobs, and what tactics and ideas you can use to get your own career off the ground.
"I was a stay-at-home mom for nearly 6 years. I had started looking into other at home work, and even attempted to take sales calls from home, but with three kids it does not stay quiet in my house for long!
I had read about a few other moms that were writing for an online website, so I thought I would give it a try. The first article I wrote sold, and I was hooked!"
"I read up on forums about writers and their experiences. I wrote sample articles for some online outlets, and then found out that there were many other places to write for. So I started looking for jobs and landed a great blogging job!"
"I worried that I didn't have a college degree. I read about others that succeeded without degrees and decided to try it. It wouldn't hurt anything if I wasn't good enough except my ego!
Each time an article was published, it gave me that much more courage to keep going. I even tried to get a job writing a column for a new magazine and after that didn't pan out, I didn't give up. I applied other places and I keep applying even now that I have a great job."
"I am the editor-in-chief for a pregnancy website, as well as the main writer. I love it!"
"I want to learn various styles such as grant writing and copy writing. I am also hoping to be published in a parenting or pregnancy magazine within the next three years."
"That just because you are starting out doesn't mean you have to accept low pay. I accepted a few $3 or $4 (per article) jobs and it's not worth it! I am worth much more than that .
Writing is an art and not everyone can do it, so take pride in your work."
Well said Amy!
