How Do I Get Writing Jobs Without Any Clips?

By Allena Tapia, About.com

Question: How Do I Get Writing Jobs Without Any Clips?

Answer:

Think Again. I bet you do have clips. There is a reason that you believe you can write. What is that reason? Did you contribute to your college paper? Or perhaps you wrote a great newsletter for your local Humane Society? Maybe your boss was particularly pleased with that last report? Whatever your history, chances are that you've done some writing in your life that lends itself to displaying your talents. Get a copy of it, and start putting together your writer's portfolio.

Make Some. On top of your past experience, you'll, of course, have to start building up clips. A great way to do this to set up your own blog. You''ll want to blog in a professional manner, on a consistent basis, about subjects that you are fairly versed in. Once your blog demonstrates a dedication and commitment, you can begin referring potential employers to it. If you're a newbie to the blog world, setting one up is easy with the right advice!

Target and Write. You may want to consider putting together a short example of your abilities based on the ad or opportunity you are responding to. Even if you don't get this particular job, you now have a clip available for the next opportunity.

Play Up Your Strengths. So, you don't have clips, but what do you got? Chances are that you've worked in some sector of the economy, have pursued a hobby, or have read extensively on something. In addition, be sure to play up your education and other training, too.

As with any job, play up your strengths and downplay your weaknesses, and, above all, keep writing.
